The guests and the hotel of Queen Victoria

Throughout the past twenty years, thousands of tourists flocked to the French Riviera as Queen Victoria often visited this area for pleasure. The reason why she stopped coming was because France and Britain stopped seeing eye to eye. She often visited Menton in 1882, Cannes in 1887 and Hyeres in 1892, and Nice on many occasions (two times to large hotels in the city and three times to the infamous Hoel Regina from 1895 until 1899). In her diary, she wrote ……….”this beautiful country that I liked and admired so...".

The Queen Victoria on the French Riviera

In the spring of 1882, Queen Victoria, 62 years old, came on the Riviera for the first time. This region she called "A natural Paradise" transformed her life. When she arrived in France, she was very happy. She came nine times to the Riviera. "Oh if only I were in Nice, I would recover then" she said when she was dying.

She spent her time on the Riviera with John Brown, an actor and Abdul Karim, an Indian. Queen Victoria enjoyed being with a lot of people from all over the world.

The important people of the European monarchy went with Queen Victoria on the Riviera. Léopold II, for instance, the King of Belgium often came.
